Which insurances apply to foreigners?
- Health insurance: mandatory for every employee from the first day of work, whatever the visa.
- National pension: mandatory for employees aged 18โ59, unless your home country does not cover Koreans in its own pension system (reciprocity) or you hold a certificate of coverage under a social security agreement. Students and some short-term visas are excluded.
- Employment insurance: mandatory for F-2, F-5 and F-6. For most other work visas (E-1 to E-7, for example) you only join if you and your employer apply. E-9 and H-2 workers are partly covered, with unemployment benefits on an opt-in basis.
- Industrial accident insurance: covers all workers. Your employer pays all of it.
Rules depend on your visa and nationality, so check your payslip or ask your employer which insurances you are enrolled in. The social insurance guide explains each one in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of national pension?
Not if you are covered. Coverage depends on your nationality and visa, not on your choice. If your country has a social security agreement with Korea, you may be exempt by submitting a certificate of coverage from your home country.
Do I get my pension contributions back?
Only if your country is on the National Pension Service refund list, or if you hold an E-8, E-9 or H-2 visa. Use the pension refund calculator to check.
What if I am not on a company health plan?
Foreigners staying 6 months or more who are not covered through an employer must enroll as regional subscribers and pay a monthly premium, which has a minimum amount for foreigners.
